Description

The pinion failed after several years in service. It was manufactured using a that usually requires surface hardening at the positions, but the surface did not present any evidence of . Instead, the contact regions presented a (TS) layer, in two alloys, a base at the interface and a base , but the hardness level at the surface is only slightly higher than the shaft itself. The TS layer detached in several regions.
