Crevice Corrosion in a Subsea System — Aspect Before Analysis
What this is
An atlas of real materials engineering cases. Nothing here is an illustration.
Two questions about the acervo come up often:
From where the images come
Donations of samples or images from engineering materials, traced to the dimensions, application, chemistry and properties. The identification of the company or personal that donated the material is not mandatory. All information considered confidential by the owner of the material is omitted from the ML, and no image is published that allows public recognition of places or companies in anonimous failure cases.
Why the cases are not fully explored to present detailed information and applications guidelines
The site was developed to present materials characteristics from actual engineering applications, like a MATERIALS ATLAS, and the full information is not always available, as well as the collected sampling is not always sufficient to provide more analysis results.
The site was not designed to provide guidelines.
What is in a case
Every case is built the same way — the record an engineer would want if the sample were on their own bench.
Aspect Before Analysis
Low Carbon Steel
The exact alloy and heat treatment tested — never a generic grade.
0.18C; 0.16Si; 0.58Mn; 0.012P
Elemental composition, in percent by weight.
Structure
Where the part was in service when the sample was taken.
Rolled Plate
The manufactured form — plate, pipe, forging, casting.
Plate (load 1 kg) — 1 test
Mechanical test results — tensile, hardness, impact.
Ferritic pearlitic · Strain Hardened · Deformed Structure
What the metal looks like under the microscope.
The low carbon steel plate, 3/8" thickness, was shot with a .308 Winchester projectile (cooper alloy case filled with lead-antimony alloy)…
The engineer’s own account of what happened and why.
How the search works
You cannot reach a dead end, because the dead ends are not on the map.

Send your case
An atlas of 184 cases is one laboratory’s memory. An atlas of thousands is a field’s.
You do not need to know our classification. Describe the material in your own words; our editors will place it.
Send your casePublishing Politics
Any member of the site may require removal of images considered offensive or not confident.
No manufacturer, supplier, owner or user company names will be published associated to any failure.
No information or image that traces a failure to the location or company will be published in anonymous donations.
