Description

The drilling riser connector presented a surface , 50 mm long and 1.2 mm deep, detected at the margin of the weld during routine inspection after 4 years in service. The location and intergranular morphology indicated that it is a that was formed after , before . Important to note that the minimum impact energy of all regions is 170J at -20°C and the crack DID NOT propagate, by or by localized , during service.

The intergranular morphology of the cracks, at the heat affected zone of the forging, indicates it is a cold cracking probably formed when the welded joint was not yet post welding heat treated. The actual hardness values at the HAZ is 270HV10, and when it was cracked it was probably a lot higher.
