Sigma Phase

Also known as: Sigma

A hard, brittle intermetallic phase that can precipitate at grain boundaries in duplex and and other alloys after prolonged exposure to elevated temperature. Its formation depletes the surrounding matrix of and , which lowers both resistance and toughness, making it an important consideration when analyzing failures in equipment that has seen long high-temperature service.
