Crevice Corrosion in a Subsea System — Aspect Before Analysis

Decorative table service fork, with a non metallic handle that is broken. The metallic part is about 165 mm long and presents two shapes: the scoop and the handle. The scoop is 53mm wide and 73mm long and the handle is about 9 mm wide and 75 mm long.

The hose connector fracture surface presented different fracture micromechanisms associated to the microstructure: inclusion decohesion, small regions of intergranular fractures (probably due to cementite at grain boundaries), and cleavage of the ferritic structure. All these mechanisms are brittle.

Micrography of the weld metal presenting a martensitic island with microcracks, due to a localized increase in the manganese and silicon content, probably because an active flux was adopted in a condition where a high cleanning action was not required. A high flux-to-wire ratio (>1) could also be an issue.
