Macrography of a wheel section close to the tread, where the material receives a localized surface hardening by quenching and tempering. The average hardness at the surface is 346HB and in the center is 196HB. The wheel was in operation for a long time and the analyzed part is at the wheel tread.

Macrography of the section transverse to the ND 14" main pipe (that is only 5mm thick) and to the ND 2" branch that is a weldolet fitting welded to the main pipe and flange. This image is interesting because it shows clearly how thin is the pipe compared with the fitting thickness and the large amount of welding required to assure a full penetration weld in the weldolet.

Cm - As polished micrographyDf - Transverse Section
Micrography, as polished, of the transverse section of the forged pin with the layer applied by a (thermal) spray and fuse process. The structure of the layer that is 0.7 mm thick, presented entrapped pores and globular oxides. The layer was melted after application by thermal spray (in this case using a flame) and the pin was quenched and tempered after the full application and melting of the layer.
