Primary Carbides

Large carbide particles that form directly from the liquid during solidification of a high-carbon or highly alloyed steel or cast iron, as distinguished from finer secondary carbides that precipitate later from the solid matrix. Coarse primary carbides can act as sites of stress concentration and reduce toughness.
