Stress Concentration
Also known as: Stress Concentrator
A local increase in stress at a geometric feature such as a notch, hole, sharp corner, or thread, well above the nominal stress calculated from the applied load and cross-section alone. Stress concentrations are common initiation sites for and other failures, and are a central consideration in both the design and the failure analysis of loaded components.
