Coring (Microsegregation)
Also known as: Microsegregation
A compositional gradient that develops within individual grains or dendrites as an alloy solidifies, because the first solid to form is depleted in certain alloying elements relative to the last liquid to solidify. It leaves the grain interior and its boundary with different compositions, which can affect local resistance or mechanical properties until removed by homogenizing .
