Tempered martensite of the pipe body of this API 5D grade S135 drill pipe. The material presents, at this low magnification micrographic aspect, a slightly banded structure, usual for this type of drill pipe.

Micrography, as polished, of the transverse section of the forged pin with the layer applied by a (thermal) spray and fuse process. The layer presented entrapped pores and globular oxides. It was melted after application by thermal spray (in this case using a flame) but the pin was not heat treated after the full application and melting of the layer and the base metal is ferritc-pearlitic.

Micrography of the longitudinal section of the bolt at the top of the thread fillet, showing a small circunferential cracking typically of a rolling process to manufacture the thread. The thread presented no evidences of plastic deformation suggesting that the heat treatment was applied later. It is important to mention that this cracking presented no influence in the fracture of the bolt.
