Crevice Corrosion in a Subsea System — Aspect Before Analysis

Aspect of the bolt fracture surface by scanning electron microscopy, (SEM) presenting striations that indicate a FATIGUE micromechanism. The bolt is of a medium strength (class 8.8) low alloy steel, medium carbon, quenched and tempered.

Aspect of the fracture surface of the bolt, after cleaning with a plastic brush. Although there is a layer of oxides it is possible to see the intergranular morphology of the fracture, typical of a hydrogen embrittlement mechanism.

Detailed aspect of the eye bolt fracture position, with strong plastic deformation indicating ductile overloading. The red marks in the thread surface of the bolt (in the left side of the image) correspond to the position where the nut was tight. Thread fillets adjacent to the fracture presented secondary cracks.

ML00130 — Fatigue Fracture of Overloaded BoltsM - Low Alloy Medium Carbon QTP - FastenerAp - O&G Well DrillingCd - Mechanical Fatigue
The four bolts have fractured in the same position, close to the end, and the corrosion marks in the thread suggest that they have been tightened only a few fillets in a tapped hole. This condition could be responsible for overloading the fillets, relaxing the applied bolt preload, and intensifying cyclic stresses.

Fatigue Fracture of Overloaded Bolts
M - Low Alloy Medium Carbon QTP - FastenerAp - O&G Well DrillingCd - Mechanical Fatigue
Cm - Aspect Before AnalysisDf - General View
The corrosion marks in the thread surface indicate that the bolt was not properly tightened in the tapped hole. The length of thread engagement should be at least 1x of the bolt diameter, in this case 3/8".

Cm - Nital Etched Micrography by OMDf - Uniform Structure
Micrography of the longitudinal section of the bolt at the top of the thread fillet, showing a small circunferential cracking typically of a rolling process to manufacture the thread. The thread presented no evidences of plastic deformation suggesting that the heat treatment was applied later. It is important to mention that this cracking presented no influence in the fracture of the bolt.
