The hose connector fracture surface presented different fracture micromechanisms associated to the microstructure: inclusion decohesion, small regions of intergranular fractures (probably due to cementite at grain boundaries), and cleavage of the ferritic structure. All these mechanisms are brittle.

Microscopic detail of the cracks at the surface of the pin, close to the fracture. It is possible to see that the cracks are not associated to plastic deformation at the surface. Instead they are brittle and associated to regions where the material lost the passivation (dark grey stains at the surface). Some cracks that already opened (a little) showed deformation at the tips.

The through wall cracking was opened by citting the two sides and the aspect was characterized by SEM. Although there was a film at the fracture surface, probably because the fitting was removed from service some time after it was leaking, the fracture micromechanism is by quasecleavage, typical of a stress corrosion cracking.
