Crevice Corrosion in a Subsea System — Aspect Before Analysis

Aspect of the bolt fracture surface by scanning electron microscopy, (SEM) presenting striations that indicate a FATIGUE micromechanism. The bolt is of a medium strength (class 8.8) low alloy steel, medium carbon, quenched and tempered.

Aspect of the fracture surface of the bolt, after cleaning with a plastic brush. Although there is a layer of oxides it is possible to see the intergranular morphology of the fracture, typical of a hydrogen embrittlement mechanism.

Hydrogen Fracture of Subsea Allen Bolts
M - Low Alloy Medium Carbon QTP - Coated ProductAp - SubseaCd - Hydrogen Embrittlement
Cm - Fractography by SEMDf - Intergranular Fracture
The hose connector fracture surface presented different fracture micromechanisms associated to the microstructure: inclusion decohesion, small regions of intergranular fractures (probably due to cementite at grain boundaries), and cleavage of the ferritic structure. All these mechanisms are brittle.
