Underbead Cracking

A weld cracking mechanism, most often associated with hydrogen, that occurs in the heat-affected zone beneath the weld bead rather than in the weld metal itself. It is typically found in hardenable steels welded without adequate preheat or with a high-hydrogen welding process, and may not be visible without removing the weld reinforcement or examining a cross-section.
