Prior Austenite Grain Boundary

The boundary of a grain as it existed in the austenite phase at high temperature, which can remain visible — or influence how a crack propagates — after the steel has transformed to another microstructure on cooling. Its size and any phases or precipitates decorating it are important indicators in the failure analysis of heat-treated and welded steels.
