Decarburized Surface
A near-surface region of a component that has lost carbon relative to the bulk composition, typically as a result of exposure to a high-temperature oxidizing or otherwise reactive atmosphere during processing or service. Because the decarburized layer is softer and weaker than the core material, it can act as a preferential site for , , or initiation.
