Crevice Corrosion in a Subsea System — Aspect Before Analysis

Aspect of the male part of the coupling, a pin, presenting the thermal spray layer detachment (right side of the figure). The pin was manufactured in a superduplex stainless steel tubular forging; the external surface was partially coated by thermal spray and machined. The sealing is only elastomeric but a coating is required to avoid galling between the two materials of the coupling.

Scanning electron microscopy image of the chromium plated cylinder surface, presenting deposits and localized dissolution under deposits. There are different stages of corrosion in this region, observed in low magnification. Small areas of attack and a shallow pitting with deposits that were analyzed by EDS and revealed the presence of S.

Cm - Surface Aspect by SEMDf - Localized Corrosion
Fractographic analysis by scanning electron microscopy of the stud fracture surface after opening the cracks. Brittle intergranular morphology with dimples and quasecleavage micromechanisms indicate that the internal cracks, intergranular, occurred by a hydrogen embrittlement effect during electroplating, and the ductile aspects are probably associated to overloading during torque.

Aspect of the fracture surface of the bolt, after cleaning with a plastic brush. Although there is a layer of oxides it is possible to see the intergranular morphology of the fracture, typical of a hydrogen embrittlement mechanism.

Cm - Longitudinal Section AspectDf - Plastic Deformation
The longitudinal section of the pin at the region of the thermal spray layer detachment, showing that the pin suffered a localized lateral bending with strong plastic deformation, responsible for the layer detachment. The figure shows the external surface (top of the figure) with the layer detachment (gray aspect), the thickness of the pin (deformed) and the internal surface (bright aspect).

Cm - Longitudinal Section AspectDf - Plastic Deformation
Micrography of a longitudinal section, at the damage surface of the pin, where the thermal spray layer was partially detached and broken. The through layer breaking is ductile, typical of an overloading condition caused by the localized bending of the pin.
