Crevice Corrosion in a Subsea System — Aspect Before Analysis

Damage — sub-branches

Aspect of the broken stud that was fastening a flanged line in a subsea body (tapped hole) using a nut. The fracture, transverse to the stud axis, occurred exactly at the body to flange interface. Adjacent to the fracture, all thread fillets (positioned inside the flange hole) presented cracks at the bottom of the thread. The stud was operating during seven years and was not corroded, indicating it was protected by the anodes. There are also deposits in the fillets suggesting the cathodic protection was effective even inside the flange hole.

Cm - Aspect Before AnalysisDf - General View
Fractographic analysis by scanning electron microscopy of the stud fracture surface after opening the cracks. Brittle intergranular morphology with dimples and quasecleavage micromechanisms indicate that the internal cracks, intergranular, occurred by a hydrogen embrittlement effect during electroplating, and the ductile aspects are probably associated to overloading during torque.

Aspect of the fracture surface of the bolt, after cleaning with a plastic brush. Although there is a layer of oxides it is possible to see the intergranular morphology of the fracture, typical of a hydrogen embrittlement mechanism.

Cm - Fractography by SEMDf - Intergranular Fracture
Scanning electron fractography of a chromium plated pin, close to the pin surface where the fatigue cracking started, showing intergranular morphology typical of a hydrogen embrittlement effect. It occurred because the low alloy pin was carburized, quenched and tempered, with a too high hardness structure, before the electrolytic plating.

Cm - Nital Etched Micrography by OMDf - Uniform Structure
Micrography of the longitudinal section of the bolt at the top of the thread fillet, showing a small circunferential cracking typically of a rolling process to manufacture the thread. The thread presented no evidences of plastic deformation suggesting that the heat treatment was applied later. It is important to mention that this cracking presented no influence in the fracture of the bolt.
