Micrography of the shaft at the surface, in a region where a thermal spray layer was not applied. The microstructure at the shaft surface is martensitic (low carbon martensite) typical of a quenched and tempered condition for this low alloy steel. The heat treatment was probably conducted before the thermal spray layer was applied.

The micrography shows the martensitic region of the tube HAZ responsible for the hydrogen cracking, presenting too high hardness level (600 HV). It is a fresh martensite since the joint was welded in one pass and there was no PWHT.
