Micrography, as polished, of the transverse section of the forged pin with the layer applied by a (thermal) spray and fuse process. The layer presented entrapped pores and globular oxides. It was melted after application by thermal spray (in this case using a flame) but the pin was not heat treated after the full application and melting of the layer and the base metal is ferritc-pearlitic.

The macrosection was hardness tested and the base metal hardness is 27HRc, the HAZ is 32HRc and the weld metal is 45HRc, revealing something wrong in the weld metal at the position close to the cracked area.

13Cr SS transverse section micrography, at the collapsed region, showing a ferritic matrix structure (overtempered) with the previous austenite grain boundaries decorated by phases (carbides and probably martensite islands), indicating that the material was exposed to a high tempering temperature that created a partial austenitizing condition. It explains the material low toughness and lower strenght (than required).
