Aspect of the broken part of the blade that felt and was removed without disassembling the instrument. The fracture is to the top and at the blade surface it is possible to see secondary cracks propagating from the main crack.

Macrography of a section transverse to the fracture, at the surface of the casting. It is possible to see the large thickness of the galvanized layer at the surface (left side of the figure). There is a white layer over the fracture surface (top of the figure) and branch cracks starting from the surface, parallel to the fracture (in the bottom left side of the figure).

Macrography of a stud longitudinal sectiion at the fracture position (top of the figure). It is possible to see a large secondary crack at the bottom of the thread fillet adjacent to the fracture surface, without any deformation evidence. This reveals a brittle material behavior, although the hardness measured at the stud end revealed 33HRc, as should be expected by the material specification.
